Arrangements for Putin-Trump Meeting Shelved Days After Budapest Talks Suggested

Currently exist "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has announced.

Last Thursday the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Budapest within two weeks to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was no longer "necessary".

The administration did not share any more details on why the talks had been put on hold.

Background Context

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting during a call with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources claimed his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with insiders claiming the president had pushed him to cede significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.

Nevertheless, on this week Trump embraced a peace initiative supported by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the war on the current front line.

"Leave it as is in its current state," he remarked.

Russia has consistently objected against halting the present battle positions.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister said on this week, implying that freezing the front line would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the hostilities needed to be addressed, Lavrov emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of extensive requirements that encompass the acceptance of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

Zelensky said talks regarding the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "doing everything" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the only topic that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unplanned conversation with Trump recently occurred before rumors that the US was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike inside Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had proven to be a "significant input" in diplomacy", he remarked.
