Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
