The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this charming family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
