Thrice-crowned NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic sustained a "heartbreaking" knee injury as the Nuggets lost by a score of 147-123 against the Miami Heat.

Jokic injured himself in the latter stages of the opening half in an accidental contact with team-mate Spencer Jones.

The other player came down on the footwear of Jokic, who promptly went down to the ground grabbing his knee.

The star, who leads the NBA this season in boards and assists, recorded a score of 21 points and eight dimes in the game before sustaining the problem.

He will have an scan on Tuesday to determine the seriousness of the injury.

"Instantly, he knew something was wrong," said Denver head coach David Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Whoever who suffers an injury, that's tough to see, especially somebody as special as he is. We will know more on Tuesday."

"We will continue as a team. Of course, currently, I'm focused just about him personally and the disappointment of experiencing something like that."
