What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 people lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the events before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
