Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
